How long have you been doing CrossFit?

2013, took a 2 year break due to health issues

How did you first discover CrossFit and what made you decide to start?

A friend who wouldn’t ‘not’ let me discover CrossFit…kept trying to get me to try it until I gave in, loved it from day one.

Tell us about your fitness/sports background:

Like all boys in New Zealand I grew up playing Rugby. I enlisted in the Army at 17 so fitness has always been important to me.

What sorts of positive changes (mental, physical, emotional) have you noticed in your life since getting involved at No Excuses?

All of them. I came into NECF busted up, I’d had a trip to the cardiac ward and wasn’t doing very well. Everyone I met was so supportive, I remember coach Laura at the time specifically but really it was everyone. Everything is better now, 100% improvement.

Who or what keeps you coming back and motivated?

The people, there is a bond built through intensity that you won’t find anywhere else. Drew said it best the other day, “Military guys don’t let each other suffer alone”.

In what other ways do you use your fitness?

CrossFit is my only real fitness activity, other than that it’s nice to be able to keep up with my kids.

Please share with us a favorite CrossFit or No Excuses moment.

The win at the Granite Games, being on the podium with my kids in the crowd. That felt good, I felt grateful to be there.

Name one goal you would like to achieve in the next year (doesn’t have to be CrossFit related, but it can be)

I’d like a bar muscle up…that’d be weird.

Tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of the gym:

Raising my three kids, sounds corny but I really am in that time of life where that’s it…they’re between 10 and 5 so its full-time. I used to do cool stuff, one day I’ll be back there but for now I’m just dad.

What advice do you have for someone just starting CrossFit or is on the fence about starting?

Just starting I’d say run your own race, don’t compare your level or progress to those around you. On the fence, then what I said about starting out is probably relevant…go for it but cut yourself some slack and work into it.

What do you love most about No Excuses?

Chris’s programming. Brandon’s haircut. Adam’s playlists. Jeremy’s helpfulness. And Addison’s whimsical take it or leave it attitude towards clothing. It’s the people, it really is.
