How long have you been doing CrossFit?

One year and four months

How did you first discover CrossFit and what made you decide to start?

Joe (my other half) convinced me to try it and I needed a change.

Tell us about your fitness/sports background:

Running and weight training since my mid-twenties

What sorts of positive changes (mental, physical, emotional) have you noticed in your life since getting involved at No Excuses?

The different workouts challenge me and prevent exercise burnout. I love the daily motivation from simply seeing how hard the NEC members and coaches work in classes and competitions. AND, being a part of the community through the fundraisers and other partnerships is personally rewarding.

Who or what keeps you coming back and motivated?

I want to stay as fit as possible. We all have limitations but there is always an adjustment or solution to overcome those at NEC. The friendships are an invaluable bonus; especially my 7 PM team! They will help me find my motivation on the darkest days.

In what other ways do you use your fitness?

I want to build and maintain physical and mental strength to prevent injuries, stay active outside the gym, and stay healthy overall. Exercise has always helped me reduce stress and we all know how bad stress is on the body.

Please share with us a favorite CrossFit or No Excuses moment.

There are many, especially seeing the outstanding NEC athletes compete. But when I finally managed the rope climb and could repeat it, I couldn’t wait to celebrate. Especially after having shoulder surgery.

Name one goal you would like to achieve in the next year (doesn’t have to be CrossFit related, but it can be)

Somehow managing to squat my body weight.

Tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of the gym:

I escape negativity through reading. I’ve recently become a Sunday food prep fanatic (Thanks Coach Karen!) And although I love to write, my job provides the only opportunity at the moment. I also love to run outside but my joints don’t.

What advice do you have for someone just starting CrossFit or is on the fence about starting?

It’s the best way to have variety in your workout and broaden your fitness capability. Although I haven’t mastered the heavy weight, I am improving and learning with every workout. I didn’t know what a power snatch was before joining NEC.

What do you love most about No Excuses?

The wide range of opportunity and potential through fitness, community, nutrition, goal setting, and friendship.

Coach Adam’s Take: “When it comes to athletes with an open-mind, it’s hard to find a better example than Mary Beth. While she is definitely aware of her strengths, her extremely positive attitude and incredible humility allow her to constantly improve any weaknesses she might have. She does everything in her power to stay consistent, including spending some extra time in our specialty classes, and she always permeates her wonderful attitude throughout any class she joins! She’s not only fun to workout with, but she’s a treat to coach, as well!”
