How long have you been doing CrossFit?
“Since February 2013.”

How did you first discover CrossFit and what made you decide to start?
“I don’t remember when I first heard about CrossFit, my best guess is around 10 years ago. I was intrigued by the difficult work outs and the fact that they were different every single day. I get bored really easily when it comes to working out so I knew CrossFit was going to be perfect for me.”

Tell us about your fitness/sports background:
“I played basketball and volleyball from an early age and continued through high school. I started water-skiing on two skis at age 6 and slalom skiing by age 11. During high school, I bought my horse and did a few horse shows. I continued showing horses in college (western pleasure, hunt seat and jumping). Before starting CF, I always just worked out in a gym and my workouts consisted of running on a treadmill and lifting weights (mostly with machines).”

What sorts of positive changes (mental, physical, emotional) have you noticed in your life since getting involved at No Excuses?
“I’ve been in the best shape of my life since starting CrossFit however since starting at No Excuses I have found that I don’t hurt like I use to after work outs, my back doesn’t hurt like it use to and I believe it’s from the well thought out programming that Chris does along with warming up properly. I’ve been to several other boxes and No Excuses has the best programming I’ve seen. I need CrossFit in my life. It makes me happy! We don’t have any family in the area so it’s been wonderful meeting everyone at NECF and forming friendships!”

Who or what keeps you coming back and motivated?
“CrossFit in general keeps me coming back. I love the community, the atmosphere, the different work outs every day, the challenge of facing each work out head on and trying to always improve.”

In what other ways do you use your fitness?
“Chasing after my very busy, active toddler!”

Please share with us a favorite CrossFit or No Excuses moment.
“My favorite CF moment was doing 3 squat cleans at 135 lbs during the scaled version of the CF Open Workout 16.2. At the time my max squat clean was 135 lbs or so I thought. During the scaled version of that open workout you had to complete 25 hanging knee raises, 50 single-unders and 15 squat cleans at 55 lbs in 4 min. If you finished that within 4 min, you added another 4 min. to the clock and so on. While the squat cleans decreased by 2 reps every 4 min., the weight would increase by 20 lbs. The workout ended at 20 min. The last set was 7 squat cleans at 135 lbs. I was thrilled to get 3 squat cleans at 135 lbs at the end of such a hard and crazy work out! My only regret at that time is after the open, I never did re-test my squat clean PR and I often wonder what it would have been.”

Name one goal you would like to achieve in the next year (doesn’t have to be CrossFit related, but it can be)
“I’d like to get back to being able to do kipping pull-ups during a WOD as well as string my T2B together.”

Tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of the gym:
“Spending time with my family, horseback riding, watching tv and traveling.”

What advice do you have for someone just starting CrossFit or is on the fence about starting?
“Just do it! Anyone can CrossFit. Everything can be modified. Be patient with yourself, if you put in the time and the work, you will see results.”

What do you love most about No Excuses?
“I love the coaching and instruction, not having to think about my work out (it’s already programmed for me), the people and the environment!”

Coach Chris’ Take:
“Ashley is a very coachable athlete. She is always wanting to learn new things. When it’s time for the workout she always gives 110% effort. Ashley does a great job of listening to the purpose of the workout and then adjusts the workout accordingly. Because of this she has made great improvements and is able to meet the required stimulus of each day.  Ashley has improved her core strength and is now starting to work on toes-to-bar again.”
