How long have you been doing CrossFit?

“Since the Fall of 2013”

How did you first discover CrossFit and what made you decide to start?
“Ward Woody and I started dating and I wanted to work out with him.”

Tell us about your sports/fitness background:
“I was a competitive tennis player, ice skater and rode hunter-jumpers from my youth until college. Played ALTA – B2 before having 3 children in the 90’s. Didn’t do anything to take care of myself until I was 45 when I started road cycling. Rode many 67 mile events and almost finished a metric century but CrossFit is a much better all-around work out than anything else I’ve ever done.”

What sorts of positive changes (mental, physical, emotional) have you noticed in your life since getting involved at No Excuses?
“Mentally – I’m more confident and determined to take care of myself. Physically – I’m stronger and feel better and that is a catalyst for a more positive mental attitude. Emotionally – I’ve come to terms that as long as I’m showing up and giving it my best, I’m doing well and far better than most people my age.”

What keeps you coming back and motivated?
“The coaches and fellow NECF athletes. Coaches truly care about your fitness and always find a way to help and modify a WOD or movement as needed. I so appreciate the instruction and attentiveness! I love the comradery among the members. Everyone is encouraging and I am especially inspired to watch my fellow female athletes of all ages achieve their best.”

In what other ways do you use your fitness?
“I’m stronger overall. So, whether doing yard work, playing tennis or cycling, I’m stronger, able to do more for longer and to avoid injuries.”

Who or what motivates/inspires you?
“My husband, Ward, motivates/inspires through his example and commitment to physical fitness. When I do get frustrated, he reminds me of how far I’ve come and how much stronger I’ve gotten. He’s my best cheerleader and I’m so blessed he chose me to be his wife.”

Please share with us a favorite CrossFit or No Excuses moment.
“Well Flip Cup [at the Boat Party] is right up there and having Brandon nickname me, “Sled Push Pulliam,” was pretty special! But without a doubt, the most special moments have been when I finally do a movement correctly and the coaches give me a thumbs up!”

Name one goal you would like to achieve in CrossFit.
“I WILL BE ABLE TO DO AT LEAST ONE PULL-UP BEFORE I TURN 60!”

Tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of the gym:
“Ward and I enjoy boating with friends and family during the summer months, college football during the Fall, traveling to warmer climates during the winter and gardening during the Spring. It’s the simple things that make me happy!”

What advice do you have for someone just starting CrossFit or is on the fence about starting?
“Just try it, show up, stop making excuses, don’t compare yourself and abilities to others, do what you can and don’t be afraid to know your own limits and ask for help to modify when needed.”

What do you love most about No Excuses?
“The People!!!”

Coach Laura’s Take:
“Kim was a little unsure of this “whole CrossFit thing” when she first started. It has been a joy to see her stick it out and become a consistent face in the evening classes. Because of that, she has improved immensely since she started. Her improvement and progress physically and mentally is evident. Kim is hard-working and wants to get things right. I appreciate how coachable she is and how she reaches out for coaching when she feels like she isn’t doing something right. She and Ward are the cutest couple and are always encouraging each other during class and after the WOD!! That spirit means the world to us at No Excuses! Kim is very well-deserving of being the Spotlight!”
