Jeff Malmquist – “Basics Spotlight Athlete”
Spotlight Athletes questionnaire Name: Jeff Malmquist Age: Occupation: Favorite WOD so far: Baseline WOD (12min AMRAP, 5 burpees, 10 KBS, 15SDHP) Important Stats (if you tested them): Baseline Time: 1 mile run: 1) How long have you been CrossFitting? I started in early January after receiving classes as a gift from my buddy Chuck who is in the full class. A great gift of health!! How can you beat that? 2) What kept you coming back/motivated? Definitely the camaraderie amongst fellow athletes. I feel like I’m letting them down if I don’t give it my all. 3) How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? Well, in the 3.5 months I have been doing CrossFit, I have actually felt several 4.5 pounds of muscle in the first 2 months. Additionally, just some little things in my daily life are so much easier, such as climbing stairs, getting arduous tasks, such as moving furniture, no longer drain my energy. 4) What is the one thing you have done here that you never thought you could do? Burpees. I was so scared of burpees. I was sure I couldn’t even do one. And even though they’re still rough, I know I can at least knock out several in a row and keep on trucking. 5) What is your opinion of the Basics Program at NEA (No Excuses Athletics-CrossFit)? The basics program is awesome. It’s exactly what I need. In my case, I felt the full class was probably too advanced to start out with being a, um, large guy. So it’s a perfect adaptation that will prepare me for the eventual move up. 6) Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through CrossFit? And one that you have already achieved? The biggest goal I would like to achieve through CrossFit is just to undo 35 years of bad habits of bad eating and ineffective exercise routines. I’d like to make a healthy lifestyle my “normal” lifestyle. But what I have already achieved through NEA is a gaining of confidence and to put away any thoughts of “I can’t”. [...]

The doctor had confirmed what I had already suspected. I had hypothyroidism. After reading all I could find on the internet, I was starting to feel hopeless about losing any weight. The condition itself could be treated medically, BUT weight loss was not typical w/ hypothyroidism.

“Doc” – Jason Toops
Growing up I always had the metabolism of a hummingbird. I could eat what I wanted and never gain a pound. This lasted up through college and into my early twenties – when I got my first desk job. Sitting at a desk, grabbing lunch where and when I could and generally having little or no physical activity had a drastic and immediate impact on my body.

Before coming to No Excuses and discovering Crossfit, I remember always feeling tired and never feeling like my clothes fit. I hated the way I looked, and was embarrassed to go shirtless at the pool. My wife complained about my snoring and I was always going to the doctor for headaches, colds, flu, intestinal problems, you name it.

I used to be the “chubby” one in my family. It wasn’t until I was 28 and had 2 children that I got frustrated enough to even try to exercise. I did several different things, and they were very time consuming. The only thing that really lasted was running.
