Masters athletes lead No Excuses CrossFit at Garage Games One

SUWANEE — A trio of masters athletes from No Excuses CrossFit were on the podium at Garage Games One on Feb. 6-8 at Suwanee Sports Academy.

Ward Woody won the scaled 50-54 division, while Barbara Parsons was the top finisher in the scaled 60+ division. Angie Drexler took third in the scaled 40-44 division.

No Excuses CrossFit also put a team on the podium with Goldilocks and the three bears taking second in the Open 1 woman division. The team of Michelle Jones, Luis Flores, Bill Bozeman and Mike Matthes were tied after three WODs and lost in the tiebreaker WOD by a few seconds.

No Excuses had 30 athletes participate in the three-day event, including seven masters athletes, four individuals, two kids and four teams.

Ward won two of the three events to claim the title in the scaled 50-54 division. He won the couplet of power cleans and burpees and dominated the triplet of wall balls, snatches and pull ups by a 32-rep margin.

Barbara took first place in all three events of the scaled 60+ division, while Angie won the triplet WOD to secure her place on the podium in the scaled 40-44 division.

Dennis Scales and Bill Bozeman placed in the top 15 in the scaled 40-44 division. Dennis was 11th overall, while Bill was 13th. Both athletes had their best finish in the triplet WOD of wall balls, snatches and burpees. Dennis was ninth overall and Bill was 11th.

Jeff Gaskins and Greg Hayes battled it out int he Rx 50-54 division. Jeff placed fourth and Greg was fifth. Tecumeseh Peete was 22nd in the Rx masters 40-44.

In the individual WODs on Saturday, rookie CrossFitter Abi Glisson made her debut in the Beginner division. Abi placed eighth overall in the 15-person division. Abi’s best finish was sixth in the row, KBS, snatch, jump rope workout.

Michelle Jones and Luis Flores finished in the top 15 in the scaled division. Michelle was 10th out of 34 athletes, while Luis was 13th out of 27. Michelle’s best finish was runner-up in the squat clean thruster and chest to bar workout and was one rep from winning the event. That was also the top event for Luis, who was fourth.

Brandon Brigman was 13th in the Rx division out of 47 athletes. Brandon’s best finish was eighth in the squat clean thruster and chest to bar workout.

In the kids competition, Sammy Scales was seventh in the Youth 7-9 division, while Shea Owings was 11.

On Sunday, the teams took over and Michelle, Luis and Bill added Mike Matthes to take second in the Open 1 woman division. They won the Row, KBS, burpees, squat workout, were second in the Know Thy Partner WOD and finished third in the Field of Pain. That put them in a tie for first place and lost by three seconds in the tiebreaker WOD.

We Make No Excuses, which featured Lilly Villafuerte, Desta Long, Laura Owings and Kim Roberts, placed 19th in the Open 4 women division.

Ready Set Sweat, which featured Kim Barb, Erika Bodden, JT Odom and Mark Harper, placed 21st in the Open 2 women division.

No Excuses CrossFit’s team of Chris Fischer, Mathew Shamloo, Laura Mattison and Deb Walston were 12th in the highly competitive Rx division.

No Excuses CrossFit members Derek and Cindi Holland were a big help to the event as volunteers, while coach Christopher Crowder was a judge for the Olympic Lifting meet.
