How long have you been CrossFitting?
“8 months”

What keeps you coming back/motivated?
“The coaching staff, community and most of all, the results I’m seeing. Some days I can’t really put a finger on what it is exactly that continues to motivate me to keep going because I hate exercising, but I love CrossFit! How weird is that?”

How did you find CrossFit?
“I had made a new-year’s resolution to lose weight and get in shape, but knowing I couldn’t alone, my wife suggested I check out No Excuses as she has a friend (Kim Lewis) that is a member there. The following week I signed up online for a free assessment with Stacey Odom and went right into the Foundations classes a week later (and kudos to Stacey for keeping a straight face while I struggled just to get through the assessment).”

What is your athletic background (If applicable)?
“Does 20 years of recreational golf count? If not, then my athletic background would be pretty close to “none”.”

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
“My initial attraction to CrossFit was the idea of weight loss through strength training, and I have to admit, in the beginning, I resisted getting anything more out of it than that. However, there came a point where I could no longer deny that exercise and nutrition go hand-in-hand. Once I embraced that, CrossFit became a life-changing experience.

More specifically, I’ve lost over 30lbs (almost all of it was fat loss), I no longer experience excruciating back pain when I wake up in the mornings, and my lung capacity has increased greatly as well as (or along with) my muscular strength and endurance.”

What is the one thing you have done here that you never thought you could do? (muscle up, double unders, heavy deadlift, run a mile, etc.)
“Doing the “Murph” on Memorial Day. Even the scaled version I did was still the longest, hardest single workout I’ve ever done, and it has inspired me to do it RX (as prescribed) next time.”

Who or what motivates/inspires you?
“Watching others achieve goals through great sacrifice and dedication is always inspiring.

In CrossFit, inspiration comes from the community (men and women) who have shown me levels of fitness at my age and beyond that I didn’t even know was possible.”

What is your proudest CrossFit achievement?
“Passing the Fitness-level strength and skills tests last month was HUGE for me! I know many new crossfitters can go straight into the Fitness level immediately after Foundations, but that was not my case at all, and I’m pretty sure I was (and probably still am) considered the “special case” among the coaches.”

Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit?
“Body fat of 10% (or better) is my ultimate goal, but I’m giving myself at least another year or two to fully achieve that.”

Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit?
“I have several other interests, but with my job and family, CrossFit is about the only “extra” thing I have the time to do.”

Any advice for new members?
“Believe it or not, nobody cares what you look like or how unfit you are. Effort is admired just as much as ability. Be consistent about coming in at least 3-4 times a week, and embrace the nutritional aspects of the CrossFit methodology as it will be your greatest catalyst to get you where you want to be.

If nothing else, just show up! The coaches will get you through it!”

Coach Laura’s Take:
“Scott jumped in with both feet and has been a true inspiration with his dedication to attending class, his passion for learning and his eagerness to improve. He has seen tremendous improvement in a short amount of time and I attribute that in large part to his work ethic. Scott has taken the initiative in changing his eating habits and the results show in his performance in the gym as well as in his before picture. I have no doubt that Scott will continue to see improvement and meet his goals.”
